Windows 8 - a total mess !

Did you use Windows 8? If not, you'll soon get them in your face somewhere! I already sold some laptops with them on. At first they look impressive - a new concept is always interesting - but use them for a while and you get to realize that it's a semi-finished idea. What do i mean by that?

It's an operating system that's really fine for touch devices - and sure they made sure that even the blindest of users will be able to see the HUUUUGE tiles that are NOT re-sizable apart from 2 preset sizes (big and bigger). As for the tile design? deadly plain! No 3d-ish touch, no shades, no appealing animations - nothing! Like DOS ages! Plain tiles in 2013! Also, get the right-side menu up in the screen (or any other menu) and you get the 1/4th of your screen covered for just four options!

Wasted space is happening everywhere in Windows 8 and you'll feel so too if you'll use them for a while and later go back to a system running windows 7.

Also, another annoyance - let's say that i want to load device manager or something from the control panel. In windows 7 you just type "device" in search (in the start window) and there you have it! In windows 8, you  type it in the search - but you have to specify "SETTINGS" to get it show up. Making life unnecessary difficult when you do lot's of settings every so and while - especially for us ITs.

Oh, Windows Aero is also gone in windows 8 (the beautiful transparent window frames with shades etc). Now, you have to stick to a solid color window frame. No option again.

The start button... why did they remove it? And why they don't give a bloody OPTION of having it back for those who need whatever it was in the panel? Why a user has to see 4 screens to see all of his applications instead?

Microsoft - for the first time in history - your interface is like shit !

Please give us the options to fix your designers "poo-poo" without having to purchase 3rd party applications (like the one that puts back the start button to it's place).

btw, can somebody enlighten me, and find me a way of creating a shortcut to an application on windows 8  desktop (not the tile desktop, the proper one) by drag-and-drop, like we could do from windows 7 start menu?

Thanks for any feedback, opinions or explanations

P.S: Internet Explorer 10 is a joke apart from being the King in wasted screen space sector.

Nokia & Microsoft event in New York taking place now!

The Nokia & Microsoft event just started in New York!
Let's see what Nokia & Microsoft will introduce to mobile technology world.
I see some interesting designs in pictures up to the moment...

'View' the event in theVerge live blog:
http://live.theverge.com/windows-phone-8-nokia-lumia-microsoft/

PS: Failure from Nokia & Microsoft for live video web broadcast of the event in Nokia webpage. http://www.nokia.com/global/about-nokia/webcast/live/
It comes with a message: "The service is unavailable." but it may work if you keep refreshing the page (try 15~20 times at least. It just worked on mine)

XXDLI1 Jelly-Bean build. New leak for S3

Another Galaxy SIII Jelly Bean leak from Samsung today (about an hour ago). The final release must be very close :)

The new firmware fixes those previous bugs:

1) Samsung and third party keyboard were giving Force-Closes.
2) Wifi direct turn on when Wifi is switched on.
3) Slow Wifi speed
4) Touchwiz issues
5) Random vibration
6) Slow AC or USB charging

In person i upgraded to XXDLI1 by flashing the HyperGalaxy rom (link below) over my XXDLH9 build. Just download HyperGalaxy_v1.2.zip from http://d-h.st/o0l and flash using ClockWorkMod.

Update: Quadrant gives lower benchmark score in XXDLI1 (compared to XXDLH9 results)

iPhone5 in 10 days! Will it really put Samsung Galaxy S3 to Shame???

The wait is over - i expected long time for the iphone5 announcement. After all that suing madness from Apple against everyone and mainly against Apple's stronger rival, that is Samsung - it's time to witness what Apple came up with, in order to put Galaxy S3 to shame, as it was previously declared.

Siri, which was introduced with iPhone-4S was a completely useless feature and is rarely used by 4s owners.

Will iPhone5 be the first real smartphone from Apple? Will it be good enough to compete with the feature packed Galaxy NoteII / S3 in both hardware and software ?

12th of September is not far from today, and i am eagerly expecting the announcement of the 'superior' device as promised.

The future of mobile is almost here !

[refresh/update on my previous post]

I rarely get amazed when it comes to technology as really amazing stuff comes once in a year or two - but in this case as a commenter said: "I Can't find my jaws" after watching the demo below :)

Long story short: You have an Android Phone - you plug it on a dock which is connected to a monitor and you have UBUNTU running straight on - without the need of loading as it shares the same kernel of Android.

This demo video was posted in February - that means that there should be lot's of improvements since then.

Unfortunately the project is not over yet - and you can't get your hands on with a beta or alpha version. However - it's on my 'desperately waiting for it to happen' list, on top of OLED TVs place which should be out about a year ago but still only seen in EXPOs, without clues for mass production yet.

See for yourself what a tomorrow's mobile will be capable of:

Supercharge your Android phone with ubuntu !

It just came to my attention, that canonical - the company behind ubuntu - is building an android based platform which will allow users run proper ubuntu Linux by attaching your phone to a monitor.

To make it simple: by attaching a monitor, a keyboard and a mouse to your phone - you'll be able to run full ubuntu linux - with your phone taking the role of a PC tower. This will offer proper full-featured applications for emailing, web browsing, image editing etc.

You won't have to 'quit' android. Both OS systems will run simultaneously as android will be sharing the same linux kernel with ubuntu. Just plug your phone to the cradle and you're good to go!

Amazing - and free !

I really Love Linux 'zealots' community and their awesome progress !

SSD Drives can now be purchased by all !

It's very good to see the SSD drive prices going down that fast !

For instance - the OCZ Agility 3 240GB was around $500 1 year ago. Now, the price for the same drive is down to $200, less than half!

Seeing the prices in the chart of the source drive below, currently we are at an average $1 per GB level with Crusial m4 256GB to offer the best $/GB rate of 0,82.

That is very good news for consumers, as an SSD drive will vastly improve the performance of any computing system at the expense of some storage space (as SSDs can't be as big as normal disk drives at the moment).

Apart from performance boost, SSDs consume less energy than normal drives and also are shock-proof. Damage to drive - consequently to the valuable data it was holding - because of drops or sudden vibrations, is the biggest issue of mechanical drives. Lot's of people lost their data because of a laptop drop accident. Definitely, the value of data is much higher than the value of the laptop. In the SSD case - the only thing that can affect your data is the SSD circuit/memory malfunction.

The actual Macbook Pro Retina Resolution isn't 2880x1800

A short post to let people know that the Macbook Pro Retina Laptop is not displaying pixel to pixel resolution of 2880x1800. Instead - it displays by default a 1440x900 resolution with pixel doubling. It's something like interpolation used by old cheap cameras or the Nokia's 40MP phone - which was having a 5MP sensor. However - you can push the resolution up to 1920x1080 (not more than this) but the display get's blurry as it's not exactly half of the 2880x1800.

Ladies and Gentlemen - your Apple! They say 2880x1800, they hide the 1440x900 (which does not  impress at all)

NOTE: You can BUY an application that recently came out (SwitchResX) to force a real 2880x1800 resolution. As expected - by a real 2880x1800 on a 15" area - the characters are so tiny that gives you eye-strain. fail !

You are stuck to 1440x900 resolution doubled.

Pasting the discussion as Apple is probably going to remove it from it's discussion website :)

Jun 13, 2012 8:47 PM

I was going to buy one today (online) but I thought I better make the treck over to an Apple store to see one in persion first and boy was I desipointed when I did.

The first thing I noticed was that I could not set the display resolution to the native 2880x1800 which was the main reason I wanted to buy it.
I spoke with 3 people, 2 sales, and the head genius and all were dumbfounded that the resolution could not be set to 2880x1800.
After I left the store I also contacted Apple by phone and spoke with 2 people, neither of whom know this nor did they understand why, let alone explain why.

None of the 5 people I spoke with could tell me if there was a fix coming in an OS update or in Mountain Lion. On top of that no one coule tell me how and app like appature would work once updated for retina. The MBP's in the Apple Store were not updated yet, as the notifications showd in the app store app.

I fear that for an app to take advantage of pixel per pixel desplay it will have to be in full screen mode.

How do I watch a 1080p movie in Quicktime and still have my Twitter feed going, or my Mail open, or repond to iMessages?

Can someone, anyone at Apple fill me in... PLEASE? There has got to be someone that actually knows someting about MBP Retina working for Apple.

I would really like some answers before I spend thousands more on Apple products.

Microsoft's surface tablet. A new type of product !

Too many innovations lately - and still we expect the google's i/o event in a few days for even more!

Microsoft introduced a new kind of product - a modified built-in keyboard tablet running on Windows 8.

There is a choice of two cover keyboards types (not counting in the color options) for two different typing styles - touch cover keyboard (capacitive) or tactile type keyboard (proper keys).

Also, it's the first tablet that offers a normal full-size USB2 port. I wonder what stopped them from implementing a USB3 port! It wouldn't be that huge difference in speed but USB2 sounds obsolete in tech ears.

The screen size is 10,6" and the tablet supports stylus input - so you can take notes, draw etc on it. The device has a kickstand too - but i am not sure if it locks to your preferred position or if it holds a specific standard angle.

This device is the first PC to use magnesium case and is less than 14mm thick with 2 lbs weight.

As the local time now is 3:30am i'll get some rest and check this device in detail tomorrow.

Microsoft MSFT major announcement event

Technical problems with the new Retina Macbook PRO.

Apple is doing a good job when it comes to preventing their design problems from showing up in their presentations - as in the case with the ipad2 which had a camera of only 0,7 Megapixel - a miserable resolution for 2011 device - but they did manage to keep it well hidden - as nobody was mentioning the resolution - not even in the reviews!

This time, a big disadvantage of the $2200+ Retina Macbook Pro was well hidden: it's not serviceable neither upgradeable!

1. The battery is glued in place and completely irreplaceable! That being said by iFixit guys means that it's  impossible to unglue the battery and glue a replacement (i guess because of the way it's soldered to the motherboard).

2. The Solid state hard drive is not upgradeable. Instead of using a standard SSD plug - they designed their own in order to prevent users/technicians from using any other offerings apart from the original apple spare part in case of malfuction.

3. The RAM chips are soldered to the motherboard - YOU CAN NOT upgrade the RAM neither replace it if it goes faulty. Out of my personal experience - being a Computer Technician in profession - RAM may go wrong in several cases. In such case with Apple Macbook Pro, forget that $40 universal RAM part replacements.

As said in the source article - Apple is artificially restricting the device's lifespan and he is quite right about that! So, Cross your fingers and hope that it wont' go wrong on you !

Also, worth noting is that an upgrade from 8GB to 16GB (This option is available only BEFORE purchasing) costs a whopping £160 on top compared to £72 which is the typical upgrade cost - but again - you have NO option - you have to choose before buying else you're left with 8GB for ever. Either pay your RAM for GOLD or stick to what you got.

If 8GB sounds much - just think who is going to pay $2200+ for this laptop. Yeap, it's userbase is going to be mostly people who run heavy applications, therefore the upgrade to 16GB is going to put them in a dilemma - "let them rape me in total or go with the basic package? "

UPDATE 15/6:
1. Battery can be replaced by Apple for $199 - said to last 1000 charges before hitting 80% capacity.

2. LCD and Camera etc are all fused together so if you brake the lcd panel or if camera stops functioning - you'll have to replace the top part all-together. As said : "Non-serviceable display"

UPDATE 19/6:
The actual screen resolution is by default downscaled to 1400x900. You can adjust the display resolution up to 1920x1080 but you can't get the 2800x1880 displayed (pixel to pixel). This is similar to something like interpolation of early cheap-py digital cameras that were using software (pixel doubling, tripling etc) to get an advertised 9+ Megapixel pictures, by using a 3 Megapixel sensor.

Wave your finger to unlock your mobile

Use "Smart Screen on" to unlock your mobile just by waving your finger/s over the proximity sensor instead of using the power button.

You can set the number of waves before unlock in order to prevent accidental wake-ups.

The article author below says that it  could be useful to save the hardware button from wear and tear, but i think it's also useful if you have one of those hard rubber phone protection cases that do cover the power button making it stiff to press whenever you want to press the power button. With this software, just wave and you are done!

Galaxy SIII will be released in U.S. as scheduled.

Sorry for the 'pervertish' picture but it fits well to this article :) Credits go to M.K.

I really didn't figure out when i heard that Apple wanted to stop Samsung Galaxy SIII from launching - the fact that many users will get their phone with a  two-year agreement, something that will prevent many potential iphone5 sales when it comes out later.

The news are so well written by androidcentral.com, so i am just pasting their announcement:
Apple won't be able to hold back the Galaxy S III tide in the US, as their request for an early injunction hearing against Samsung's latest has been denied by U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh in San Jose. Because her calendar was so full she had no time to hear the case before the June 21 Galaxy S III launch, effectively dashing Apple's hopes to keep it out of your hands. This does not affect the trial itself, which will go on as planned -- just not when Apple wants it to.
This is a big deal to both sides. The Galaxy S III is expected to sell well, and many users will be under a new two-year agreement when Apple releases their next model sometime later this year. According to analyst Dan Levine (read the source link), postponing the launch of the Galaxy S III was a major part of Apple's strategy in the battle for smartphone dominance, and we have to agree. Once users get the new Galaxy S III in their hands, they may not want to look at any other phone for a while.

Two Weeks away from Google I/O and Jelly Bean Android

Since nothing exciting was introduced by Apple in the WWDC yesterday, i am now hoping for some true innovation in the next big developers event in two weeks, the Google 2012 I/O.

Most probably, google will announce the Jelly Bean Android, an upgrade to the Ice Cream Sandwitch Android (ICS).

Apart from any other possible improvements, I really hope of an improved  multitasking solution in Android JB - as i said in previous posts of mine - multitasking like experienced on BB's Playbook or Nokia's Maemo as it's the only Android's disadvantage.

Apart from Jelly Bean, there will be huge improvement in search technology behind Google. As said, Google.com will ressemble a similar to Startrek computer interraction. Not my cup of tea to talk to my PC but options are good - some will definately use it.

Apple: Applauses and Cheers on demand! WWDC 2012 was a software tech failure!

That's what i realized happening today in the Apple's WWDC 2012! iPeople cheering and applauding for stuff that they are around since ages!

Apart from the uber-high-resolution 'retina' as they call it display, there was nothing new to see. Apple Maps is an interesting approach and hopefully will be  good enough in order to push google into inventing even more superior map functions.

UPDATE 19/6:
The actual screen resolution is by default downscaled to 1400x900. You can adjust the display resolution up to 1920x1080 but you can't get the claimed 2800x1880 to display (pixel to pixel). This is similar to something like interpolation of early cheap-py digital cameras that were using software (pixel doubling, tripling etc) to get an advertised 9+ Megapixel pictures, by using a 3 Megapixel sensor.

The moment where the "world's most advanced mobile operating system" shined and showed the crowd that Apple invents (and others just copy) was when they were showcasing the "do not disturb" feature:

"You can also reject a phone call and have your phone automatically respond with a message to the caller"   <--- This should be a hilarious joke! but instead - people got amazed! Amazing Technology! A bit ancient for the rest of us, since we had it for years... but Apple was the first to do it right! as they always claim.

The whole conference was like this! People cheering for USB3 (has been around for a year), cheering for ivy bridge (it's been on non-apple laptops for a couple of months) and last but not least: DICTATION! The uber FAILURE of all times! Microsoft had it for at least a decade! BUT! Most of the times, you say something and computer understands something different - and you just drop using it after 10 minutes of trying - it simply BRAKES YOUR NERVES when it does not get it straight-thru!

I believe that precision in dictation will suffer for many more years since even a single word is pronounced like a billion ways with a gazillion voicetones & voicespeeds. The best voice recognition algorithms were implemented by Google, hands down - it get's to the most accurate levels - but still - it's not for using it prime-time unless if you can't use your fingers to directly issue a command - for example - while driving - hopping that you won't have to repeat what you said.

As with SIRI case - Apple's approach is to get the people (the iPeople type of guys) go like: "you can now talk to your laptop instead of typing or using the mouse, as you do with your iphone". I bet this 'joke' is going to be everywhere in the newspapers tomorrow. I wonder how many of the iphone4s users use siri after the second week?

"you can now share Web pages, locations, photos and more to Facebook from virtually anywhere in the OS" <--- this was happening in Android since ages - but they didn't thought of issuing a worldwide conference to tout it! You see, it wasn't considered as special feature since all applications share their data to almost everywhere. Note that you are still NOT ABLE to share your iphone pictures yet - can't be attached to emails neither can be send with bluetooth :)

Closing, i am pasting what a reader said in the link below: "I can't wait for Apple to sue Google for "copying" it's turn-by-turn navigation system. It'll bring me a good laugh."

That's Apple - the company that sells Rotten Apples for the price of Gold !

See what other features are missing from iPhone compared to other phones:

Apple Worldwide Developers Conference in Monday. They will announce "THE WORLD'S MOST ADVANCED MOBILE OPERATING SYSTEM"

As Apple claims (seen on banner), they will announce  the "World's most advanced mobile operating system" in the upcoming Monday. The iOS 6 !

I hope that this super-duper most advanced mobile operating system will be able to:

1) Save embedded files that were received on emails to a folder on the device (you know - in order to be able to play that mp3 that your friend emailed to you without having to find his email every time you want to hear it)

2) Will be able to send/receive pictures/mp3's/files with bluetooth (a function offered by any phone over $40)

3) Will be able to be used as a USB drive for transfering files to and from it without the need of iTunes. Useful if you want to copy 2~3 MP3s or pictures or documents from your friends computer without forcing him to download and install iTunes on his PC (offered by most ~$100 phones)

4) Will be able to handle flash websites (sorry, but they are still too many to omit! HTML5 is not that famous yet)

5) Will be able to understand voice commands in any other language apart from english.

6) Will be able to offer alternatives to the factory keyboard. For instance, in Android you can install far better keyboards than the built-in, with superb  functions like predicting the next word - not just the word you are typing. In iOS - you are stuck with one keyboard (the built-in) with no other given options.

7) Will be able to display the date a picture was taken without having to purhase an app for that! (As a friend noticed)

8) Will be smart enough to do Text Wrap when you zoom-in a webpage.

9) And last but not least - Will be able to use gadgets on homescreen.

If you belong in the 52% smartphone users who use Android, then skip the Apple event, i believe there will be nothing new to see. But then again - it will be nice to see the efforts of a big $$$'s giant to catch up with other superior mobile operating systems.

Looking forward in seeing the most advanced mobile operating system iOS6 ! Very curious on that "the world's most advanced" part of the banner.

PS: Do you know of any other limitations of iOS? Let me know! (would be interesting)
Also, let me know if any of the above 9 limitations was fixed in the latest iOS version, in order to correct the post as those are issues i heard from various iphone users during a big period of time.

Speed up your Hard Disk Drive

Hard disk drives have a feature named "acoustic drive management".

That management setting controls the noise/performance of the drive. Noise=Performance. Silent operation=low performance.

In order to set your disk-drive to make more noise and get snappier/speedier than being lazy and silent, use the command below in a linux terminal:

sudo hdparm -M 254 /dev/sdb    ← this sets acoustic management sto 254 (fast)

Command analysis:
hdparm <-- the ... command
-M 254 <--- A value of zero gives opium to drive - makes it silent but looses speed. A value of 254 (Max) makes the drive faster but makes more noise.
/dev/sda <--- the hard drive id (master partition)

To view the partitions of your system (in order to decide which drive/s to boost):
sudo cat /proc/partitions

If you have sda , sda1, sda2, sdb, sdb1, sdb2 in list you have to choose sda or sdb or both.

Note that the setting remains active even if you dual-boot into windows.

If you want to see your hard drive current setting before or after altering it, type:
sudo hdparm -M /dev/sda <-- change /dev/sda to your /dev/sdx drive

From my personal experience (at least with the several drives that i have used) the manufacturers set the acoustic drive management to 0 (that is siiiilent)

That's a 'trick' i'm proud of finding out in order to boost my PCs performance :)

Enjoy !

Note: All commands must be issued in a Linux terminal.

Apple Sucks big time! Another lawsuit aiming to stop spreading superior devices!

Mobile industry is one of the most loved industries by people worldwide. It's definitely a trend - to have a gadget that does miracles in the palm of your hand!

Unfortunately, Apple since they lost the mobile market leadership, acts in a very pathetic way! Instead of trying to surpass their rival inventions, they constantly whine about copying their technologies - as if Apple never copied anyone! As if they were no mobile phones before iphone!

If you want your glory taken back - put your arses down and invent instead of suing everybody that comes out with a superb mobile device. It's no secret that Galaxy SIII sports superb specifications compared to iphone 4s in any way of view - Hardware and Software.

To get an idea of what Apple is about nowadays - they seem to sell rotten apples for gold - as in the case with ipad2 - which was introduced in March 2011 and the main camera had a ridiculous resolution of 0,7 MegaPixels! 0,7 Megapixels reminds me of 1997 device and not a 'superb' device of 2011! The front camera had a mere 0,3 Megapixels! Is this the technology edge of Apple? Is this the quality Apple supplies in return for their high product prices?

Crowd can't be kept blind for long and copying-pasting your iphone1 to iphone4s with minor insignificant design and OS changes is not an invention! Siri - which differences iphone4 from iphone4s OS is useless in the long run as most iphone4s users say in the forums. The CPU in 4s upgraded to dual core and a new iphone is out! SIRI and Dual core CPU was enough to name an upgrade after a year of wait!

Go Apple, moan all way thru - the game is over and you market is now gone !

Android sports a stunning 52% of the global market share - and get's bigger month by month. Moan about it but either invent or watch people walking away!

This article was written as a react of Apple's latest attempt to block the U.S. release of the Samsung Galaxy S III. An attempt to block the superior entering the country... so much pathetic !

Tizen - a possible rival to Android.

A new mobile OS project is in the works!

Tizen, was announced last month and as said in it's webpage - it's an open source, standards-based software platform for multiple device categories.

From what i've seen, Tizen is based on HTML5, while android is based on QT. However, both projects core is  based on Linux.

What makes Tizen worth keeping an eye on - is that it derives from linux foundation, which consists of approximately 800 companies and 8000 Linux zealot developers.

Apart from linux foundation, two big names behind Tizen development are Intel and Samsung. Intel's previous project - Meego - was a linux mobile OS attempt in co-operation with Nokia, but while building it - Nokia went under 'Microsoft control' - a move that 'forced' the company to walk away from Meego in order to support Windows Mobile OS which now holds a bizarre 1~2% of the mobile market share.

Intel with Samsung and with the aid of the Linux foundation, work into getting Tizen prime time and that is interesting since we don't have a serious competitor to Android as of now.

Of course - this makes me wonder - will google - provide cloud support to Tizen, and if yes - to what level? I mean - most of smartphone users now use google services for free to view/edit/share/collaborate documents (docs), store/share files (drive), sync/manage contacts, manage/share calendar entries, emails, maps, navigate etc. Will all those goodies be provided to Tizen? If not - then Android will clearly have huge advantage over tizen and any other similar platform.

For the time being, Android is my number 1 choice and Samsung Galaxy S3 is the phone i am buying in a couple of days (most probably Monday) to work on for the next 2~3 years.

To me, the biggest drawback of Android, is the lack of proper multitasking - as seen on BB's Playbook and Nokia's N900 (Maemo).
